Google Maps With Ariel View – A Mini Report

21 09 2008

I recently updated my version of Google Maps for my N82 which now includes an ariel/satellite view option, coupled with inbuilt GPS and a network 2/3G connection it works a treat. You would obviously think of data charges when using Google Maps, as the maps/imagery are downloaded on the fly over your network connection.

I decided to put this to the test this weekend, i had the weekend off so i took the family to our holiday home in Cornwall and used google maps in satellite view on the journey down there. It’s a 60 mile drive from our home and should take about an hour on a good day, i started Google Maps from home in satellite mode and kept it going for the duration of the journey which took us about 30 mins more due to tractor traffic!!

The maps downloaded amounted to roughly 5Mb of data transferred through the 3G connection, it would be advisable to have an unlimited data plan if you are going to use this as an alternative to sat nav like Nokia Maps or Tom Tom, even still 5Mb of data isn’t a great deal to have an alternative to the paid sat nav serices.  Using the inbuilt GPS on the N82 and Google Maps was a pleasurable experience, it was quick enough to calculate your position and map sections came in thick and fast over a 2/3G connection.
