Subsidised Macbook With Orange Data?
30 03 2009Orange UK are once again rumoured to be in talks with Apple, this time for Macbooks and not iphones! Read the below report from El Reg………….
Orange is reportedly in talks to add a MacBook to the range of subsidised hardware network operators are handing over these days, equipping the mobile executive for only a small monthly commitment.
It wouldn’t be particularly surprising to see a subsidised MacBook coming with an Orange-tied 3G dongle, and joining the plethora of free hardware that stretches from Playstations to netbooks to cinema tickets and carrying bags; all in the interests of getting punters to sign on the dotted line.
The latest development is being reported by Mobile Today, who reckon that the MacBook won’t be a freebie – just heavily subsidised. Orange is prepared to hand over the £350 Toshiba L300 to those prepared to sign up to a £35-a-month contract for a couple of years. That would put a basic MacBook at £369.

N82 The White Screen Of Death (WSOD)
25 03 2009Well i posted about this 2 weeks after i got my N82 (6 months ago) and it’s reared it’s ugly head yet again! Last night i installed the new version of Nokia Sports Tracker 2.05 and soon after that my N82 developed the dreaded WSOD yet again. I tried everything as i did the last time this happened, soft reset, remove sim, remove memory card etc but it wasn’t to be! So once again i have had to have the unit replaced by the network, it’s a good job i work for them!! LOL

Have you any stories of a similar occurence with your N82, lets us know?

My Most Used S60/Java Applications
20 03 2009I have had my Nokia N82 for sometime now and have installed many apps which have come and gone! Well now that i have fianlly settled with the best i’ll let you know what i’m currently using. Of course there are the inbuilt apps like Maps, Browser, email etc. But think of the applications available for the S60 OS they are immense in numbers and very easy to get hold of, either free or paid for they are easy to find!
I’ll start from most used to least in a Top 10 of my most used applications for a S60 mobile, in my case the Nokia N82!!
1: Nokia E-Mail
I use this on a daily basis, my phone is constantly connected to either wi-fi or a network internet connection to get my email account pushed to my phone. While Nokia provide this service with no charge it would be advisable to have some sort of internet bundle with your provider, to curb data transfer costs! (Updated to include multiple account support and hotmail users can get email pushed too)
2: EBuddy
A great IM application which will provide you with mobile access to your fave IM protocols including, MSN, ICQ, AIM, Yahoo, GTalk and Facebook. Again it would be advisable to have a flat rate data plan unless you are only going to use this occasionally.
3: GMail
As Nokia email can only support one email account at present i find it essential to have Gmail running in the background aswell, of course that is if you have more than one gmail account to keep an eye on?
4: Mobitubia
I have used Mobitubia for about 8 months now and have found it very usefull, saving clips is great if you want to watch stuff offline with your friends, the app sits quite comfortably within your applications menu and is ready to connect when you want. I have posted the new youtube application today but this app lacks the save functionality!
5: Handy Shell
This app will increase the active standby functionality by a good mile, it adds extra features like switch on BT with one click, calendar entries, it also adds a customizable shortcut menu as well as Handy Weather if you have it…………..
6: Handy Weather
Well worth the purchase or if like me i got it free with S60.com, it’s a nice littele weather app which also pugs in to the Handy Shell application. It adds a nice weather service to your phone, and i have to say it is rather reliable and has served me well so far, with a good couple of different weather screens!
7: Screenshot
I use screenshot a lot now i write this blog, as the title suggets it takes a screen shot of what your phone is doing at any given time! All the screen shots from the Nokia N82 on this site are taken with my phone and this program.
8: Handy Blacklist
This is a feature which drew me to the S60 OS, having an app that can block calls from certain numbers is a must. I get called on a weekly basis from call centers and salesmen which i do NOT want. This app will let you block their numbers and your phone will not even seem to ring, you can of course check a log which lists all numbers in the blacklist which have tried to call and at what time! Great App!
9: BBC iplayer
This app is only supposed to work on certain Nokia handsets, however if you know what your doing you can get it working on your N82 over a GPRS/3G network!
10: Opera Mini
While the inbuilt webkit browser on my N82 is good, it does not do as well as the Opera Mini 4.2 browser. Most websites are a joy to navigate with the zoom feature working a treat on my N82, couple this with access to the Opera Community and speed dial it’s a great addition to the inbuilt webkit from nokia.

YouTube App For S60 Released
20 03 2009Youtube/Google have released a new application for Nokia S60 handsets today, it’s what a lot of heavy mobile users have demanded since applications were made available for other phone OS, as well as adding the in browser flash player ability which i posted about a couple of days back.
Users can download the application from http://youtube.com directly from your mobile browser or the sisx file can be found at Symbian-Guru, the application is very easy and a joy to use. Below i have provided some screenshots of the sleek looking interface for the new S60 application…………..

As you can see from the shots above, you can change the connection point whenever you want which is ideal for situations where you are out and about then walk into a wi-fi enabled area like your home or a hotspot. check it out and let us know what you think?

Samsung To Launch Movie Downloads!
19 03 2009
Samsung today launched a new movie download service for Samsung mobile devices, the new Tocco Ultra Edition will be the first handset in the lineup to be able to use the service in the UK, with other european countries to follow later. the service will allow users to download movies to own at a cost of anything between £6.99 ($9.95) and £16.99 ($24.23) depending on the title downloaded, for 24 hour rental costs are between £2.49 ($3.55) and £3.99 ($5.69).
Either way users are given both a PC version to download and a mobile optimized version to play on your phone, Samsung’s goal is to be able to offer this service for any of it’s consumer products that are IP enabled including laptops, music players and televisions. The movie store launches with over 1,000 movies from studios such as, Warner Bros., Paramount, and Universal. Samsung estimate download to PC time at 25mins for a 1.5hr DVD quality movie file, a mobile optimized version would take 5-10 mins, this is obviously determined by broadband speed and would not be advisable for users still using 56K modems, transfer to the mobile phone would take a further 4-5 mins.
Apple already provide movie downloads for iphone users and Nokia are steadily expanding their footprint in the content market, Sony Ericsson are also moving into this area after a recent announcement. Motorola also launched a similar service last year but with only one movie studio (Paramount) onboard, it’s unclear how the service is performing.

Hotmail Gives Us pop3!
18 03 2009Microsoft recently gave all hotmail users what they wanted, access to a pop3 server! It has been a long time coming but be thankful it’s finally here. Working in the mobile industry i have been asked many times over the last 6 years “Can you setup hotmail on my phone please!”. Well now it’s a reality instead of disapointment of not being able to use your phones inbuilt mail app to handle the account.
Of course this is a revenue loss for Microsoft as users previously had to pay for the luxury of pop3 with hotmail plus for £15.00 yearly, with GMail and others offering pop3 access for free Microsoft had to reluctantly (no doubt) cave and offer the service for free.
Settings:
POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25 or 587)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes
Next up is a guide on setting up your S60 Nokia with hotmail………………

Flash Player For You Tube Mobile Portal
18 03 2009You Tube have added a flash based player to their mobile portal, so users can now play video from directly within the site as opposed to opening up your handset streaming player like Realplayer on S60 devices from Nokia.

I haven’t been able to test this on my Nokia N82 (30.0.019) as yet because the link does not show up but is has been mentioned on another site that a user with an E71 can. The same user also mentioned that if he changes his browser agent class to that of an N96 the link would not show up!
So it seems that some users will have this added extra while others are sat waiting for it to be rolled out to other handsets.

T-Mobile UK Adds Email Service £3.50 A Month
18 03 2009T-Mobile UK has launched Instant Email, a mobile e-mail service for £ 3.50 per month. Customers can try the service for free for one month and then move on to a rolling monthly booster (without a long term contract), getting access to up to five accounts on common web mail services such as Google Mail and Hotmail.
Instant Email customers are alerted when new e-mails arrive, with no need to log on to the internet. The service is initially available on select Nokia devices, with more phones expected soon. The monthly fee covers all the e-mails and associated attachments. There are no extra charges if the user exceeds the fair use policy and when going abroad the service becomes an opt-in.
