Sony Ericsson Also Announce Unlimited Music

11 09 2008

Nokia recently announced their new music offering ‘Comes With Music’ which will allow users access to a huge music catalogue from the big record labels. Now Sony Ericsson have also announced a very similar offering.

Sony Ericsson is apparently in discussions with the large music labels about the service which would be a perfect added value product for it’s popular Walkman phones. Despite producing some of the higher quality music phones Sony Ericsson has seen a decline in market share recently and analysts feel they are now being pushed into the “all you can eat” music service by competitors.

There is no doubt that bundling unlimited music downloads will help sell mobile phones but Sony will have to pursuade networks such as EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMG (current partners in the pay as you download PlayNow Arena operated by Sony Ericsson) that unlimited downloads are a viable business model.

Nokia’s planned service includes DRM so if Sony Ericsson can offer unrestricted downloads they would gain an early advantage over their competition.

Orange Rockcorps 26th Sept 2008

10 09 2008

Orange Rockcorps will descend on The Royal Albert Hall in just over 2 weeks to present a gig to celebrate the volunteering projects they are actively involved in across the UK. Orange are in partnership with RockCorps, a pro social music production company, to harness the power of music to inspire a new generation of young people to make a real difference in their local community.

Multi-Grammy award winner John Legend will join Guillemots and Busta Rhymes to play an exclusive, money-can’t-buy gig for volunteers taking part in Orange RockCorps, a national music-led volunteering programme.

Taking place at the Royal Albert Hall on 26th September, tickets to the cross-genre, all-star supergig will not be available for fans to purchase or win. In a bold departure from the norm, fans can’t buy their ticket, they can’t win their ticket, they have to earn their ticket by taking part in a four hour Orange RockCorps community project.

Nokia Comes With Music Launch News

9 09 2008

Nokia has announced that the UK will be the first market where it will launch its much talked about “Comes With Music” service, according to Informa Telecoms & Media. The agreement with UMG (Universal Music Group), SONY BMG and Warner Music will ensure that users will have access to over 2.1 million music tracks.

Carphone Warehouse will be the exclusive UK prepay channel to sell the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic Comes With Music handset.

In general, adoption of most mobile music services has so far been slow and disappointing. Nokia hopes to change this trend and therefore unlike most other music services, Comes With Music will allow users to keep and listen to all the downloaded music even after the one year subscription period ends.
Also, Comes With Music forms part of Nokia’s strategy to compete with rivals such as Apple and to drive the uptake of its Ovi services, including the purchase of music from its Music Store.

Nokia believes that after the one year subscription period ends, many of the Comes With Music users will continue to spend on music and purchase new tracks and releases from the Nokia music store, or will subscribe to unlimited access to its Music Store.

It will be interesting to see how the network operators in the UK will react as most have thier own music download services run In-house! Although Nokia have already signed internet services deals with Vodafone, Orange, and T-Mobile.
